Author’s Note:
Before you proceed with this fic, I want you to think about this: Life isn’t filled with dreams. Rather, it is filled with ups and downs. We should not be dreamy all the time, we have to be realistic – especially nowadays that we are ONE against various wars of the world. We should be sensitive. We should be aware. We should be sympathetic.
This story is dedicated to those wives and girlfriends who have lost their soldiers from battles to protect their countries. May God always be with you and the souls of the ones you love.
=======================================================
It was two weeks after the day she turned eighteen
All dressed in white
Going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
Sixpence in a shoe, something borrowed, something blue
During the wedding ceremony, all he did was stare lovingly at the young lady in front of him. Her innocent eyes, her hair and her rosy-white skin. She’s an image of perfection, and he’s ecstatic to know that her heart belongs to him.
“I can’t believe we’re already married!” he whispered
in her ear as they stepped out of the church, unable to hide the excitement
in his voice.
agreed as she wrapped her arms around her husband – Lieutenant
.
At 18, didn’t care about the fact that she’s too young to settle down. She hasn’t even gone to college. She just wanted to be with – the man she had looked up to when she was younger. The man that she didn’t think she would fall in love with, and would fall in love with her. The man who completed her. He was “her” soldier, and proud of that fact.
At 24, has already gone to Iraq for almost a year. He has gone into battles with a pure desire to protect his men. But during his dull sleepless nights, all he wanted to be was with . The woman he sure would want to give his whole life to.
And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down
Trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldn't believe it
She heard trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hand
It had only been one year since the first time she stepped into the same church with .
Dressed in a black knee-length dress with a matching black veil hat, slowly walked down the aisle again, making her way to the altar. The excruciating sound of the trumpets from the military band in the background only made her knees weaker and weaker with every single step she took.
When she was halfway through the aisle, she suddenly dropped to her knees as the flowers fell out of her hand. She sobbed uncontrollably as she remembered how she found out about the sad news.
Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
*Doorbell Rings*
was startled to find a young soldier on her doorstep. He had a blank expression but he couldn’t deny the sympathetic look in his eyes when you look closely to them.
“Mrs. ?”
“Yes…” she answered in a voice almost a whisper. She’s
dreading the possible news that came with this young soldier.
He didn’t say a word, he handed her an envelope. The moment she saw the US Army seal, she opened it hesitantly with shaking hands. The young soldier then, walked away from her, he surely hated the fact that he had to deliver the bad news to her.
The ink on the paper smudged as her tears fell. She couldn’t bring herself to read the rest of the note when she came by the phrase “passed away”. Her husband’s gone. Her soldier’s gone. Half of her life’s gone.
The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
Lord please lift his soul, and heal this hurt
Then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song that she ever heard
Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
Oh, and what could have been
And then the guards rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart
Her mother-in-law walked up to her, helped her stood up and guided her to stand beside the casket.
“Let us bow our heads and pray. Lord, please lift his soul, take him to your kingdom and take care of him. Please heal the pain his death caused his loved ones and the people who loves him,” the preacher man said as he put both hands over the white casket in front of him.
After the blessing, the church choir all stood up and started singing a sad song she hadn’t heard of. The military officer then handed her a folded-up American flag which she took with shaking hands.
As the choir continued singing, she closed her eyes and held the flag closer to her. She cried silently, thinking of their past. Thinking of their happy moments as a young couple. Thinking of what could have been if he’s alive.
She felt as if her heart was ripped into pieces when the guards made those twenty-one gunshots. She thought she’d rather be shot than to have to go through life without her husband.
Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
They allowed her to have one last moment with her husband alone. She walked slowly and silently beside the closed casket, she touched it lovingly as if actually touching her husband’s face.
She still couldn’t believe he’s gone. She wanted to touch him; she wanted to wake him up from his endless sleep. She just wanted him to be beside her – desperately.
This is just a dream
Just a dream
She bowed and draped her arm on top of the casket. She wanted to whisper, “, if this is just a dream, please wake me up, honey.” But decided against it.
Instead, she whispered, “Honey, I will always love you. Please watch over me.”
The End
